Redevelopment of the Bernabéu: a stadium fit for the 22nd century
The new Santiago Bernabéu, designed by the GMP-L35-Ribas group of architects, is almost a reality. Projecting a unique, cutting-edge, wraparound image, the stadium includes a large cornice overhanging the main entrance, which extends out over the square without any supports on the ground, forming a large 2000 square metre atrium, which will be the entrance to the new Bernabéu.
The other major reforms include a new stand on the east side , a little higher than the old one, although the final capacity will still be 80,242 seats (one less than currently), as well as the retractable roof which allows the pitch to be used whatever the weather, in addition to reducing the acoustic impact for local residents.
Furthermore, the improvement and modernisation of access, transit and evacuation routes with new doors, escalators and elevators make the Santiago Bernabéu a modern and more accessible stadium. Architectural barriers will be eliminated in all accesses, inside and also in the surroundings, and 800 new seats will be created so that people with different abilities can enjoy the stadium without limitations.
