Century-old Establishments

These shops and businesses allow us travel back to the past as if they were time machines. They include bars, restaurants, shops, pharmacies and bookstores which all form an integral part of the city's intimate history; a history which has evolved both behind and in front of their noble wood and marble counters.

Some of these establishments make an appearance in novels by Baroja, Galdós or Cela, while others have simply always been there, even before our grandparents were born. Spanning one, two, three, and even four generations, these businesses—though not originally built to last forever, to honour a heroic deed, or to beautify the streets—have become living history of Madrid. Their enduring presence is a testament to their owners' professionalism and dedication.

The capital's century-old establishments are easy to spot thanks to the commemorative plaque designed by Spanish cartoonist Mingote, which you'll find placed on the pavement outside.

Traditional stores

What is truly remarkable is the continued survival of specialised businesses, whose unique offerings seem to have guaranteed their lasting success and presence among the city's shops. These include establishments specialising in espadrilles, guitars, ropes, knives, tailor-made suits, corks and much more.

Pharmacies

In order to inspire trust among their customers, chemists traditionally featured luxurious décor. Medicines, herbs, ointments and other products were all kept in china pots made at the factories at El Retiro or La Granja, and displayed in Rococo, Neo-Gothic or Classic-style cupboards and drawers. Madrid's historic pharmacies, many of which remain open today, are wonderful examples of furniture from different eras—depicting beautiful scenes more suited to a palace than everyday life.

Cafés

Back in the day when houses were cold and damp, and there was no television or internet, people would flock to cafés seeking a cosy atmosphere to enrich their social lives. Marble tables, long cushioned benches, dark wood and intricately crafted ceilings recreated the ambiance of a public gallery where patrons discussed politics, literature and even shared the latest gossip.

Bars and restaurants

The city's streets are lined with an array of bars and restaurants that have been perfecting their signature recipes for decades. The secret to these eateries lies in their kitchens, where time and expertise have honed their dishes to exquisite quality. Step inside these time-honoured establishments for tapas, lunch or dinner with friends and family, and experience the blend of Madrid's past with its present.
