CaixaForum Madrid is a 21st-century sociocultural centre which opens its doors to ancient, modern and contemporary art, music and poetry festivals, multimedia pieces, debates on current affairs, social events and family and educational workshops.
The spectacular building on Paseo del Prado, near Paseo del Arte's (Art Walk) three world-famous museums—the Prado, the Thyssen-Bornemisza and the Reina Sofía—is one of the city's cultural hotspots. Renovation work on the building that once housed the Mediodía electric power station was carried out by the Herzog & de Meuron architecture firm, who is responsible for the two original features that make CaixaForum Madrid so recognisable: its vertical garden and the structure's "floating-in-mid-air" effect.
The centre boasts an area of over 2,000 square metres, encompassing exhibition halls, an auditorium with seating for 322 people and various multipurpose conference rooms. A café, quirky shop/bookstore and a restaurant round out the amenities.
